Fashola Explains Why Buhari Can’t Stop Blaming PDP For Nigeria’s Problems

Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is right to blame the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for Nigeria’s economic problems.

Fashola also blamed the current recession on the past government’s habit of giving handouts instead of investing in infrastructure.

He made the comments while giving a lecture titled “Leadership and the Politics of Reform in Africa: Lessons from Nigeria” at the Wilson Centre in Washington D.C. on Tuesday, September 20.

“In Nigeria, the choices of yesterday make this winter a very harsh one for our people, because we did not invest in the right things. Our government of yesterday expressed its preference for providing ‘infrastructure of the stomach’, giving handouts instead of real infrastructure,” Fashola said according to ThisDay.

“This is how the seeds of today’s recession were sown. For those who say that today’s government should stop talking about yesterday, with due respect, I disagree. Yesterday will remain relevant in understanding today in order to make choices that make tomorrow different and better.

“I once used the allegory of the patient, and I think it deserves repetition. If a patient complains about stomach pain, the first question that the physician is likely to ask is: ‘What did you eat yesterday?’

“The answer helps the physician make a diagnosis and choose a prescription first to solve the problem, and to recommend further dietary habits about what to eat and what not to eat. This is what the current leadership is addressing.

“We did not invest in roads, highways, bridges, schools and hospitals. Money was taken out of the larger society and invested in private accounts. The economy began to shrink, construction companies laid off workers, who in turn lost income, which resulted in shrinking demand for goods and services, and in turn led to national under-productivity.

“That was what we ate yesterday. The stomach pain is comparable to symptoms of bad dietary choices that manifest in the recession we now deal with. The solution is to spend on infrastructure, which has started. The recovery time is a function of what we can spend and how quickly it will go round… If an arid area of land has not witnessed rainfall in two to three years, you know what happens when the first rain falls. It literally disappears into the ground.

“In order to reach a point where any moisture is visible in the soil that may support the germination of a seed to be planted, more rain water needs to be injected. This is the best analogy I can offer for where our national economy is. But I will conclude by saying I am optimistic that we will turn things around,” he added.

Buhari has frequently blamed the PDP and former president, Goodluck Jonathan for the state of Nigeria’s economy.

Recession: ‘Nigeria In Trouble Because It’s Fantastically Corrupt,’ Lawmaker Says

British-PM-David-Cameron-with-Nigerian-Presdent-Muhammadu-Buhari (1)A member of the House of Representatives, Sadiq Ibrahim has said that Nigeria is in a recession because it is fantastically corrupt.

Ibrahim, who represents the Furore/Song Federal Constituency of Adamawa State, also blamed the recession on the insecurity in the country.

“If a country is bedeviled by insecurity – Boko Haram in the North East; militants in the South South; kidnapping in other parts of the country; definitely it will experience economic recession,” he said on the floor of the House on Thursday, September 22.

“If a country is fantastically corrupt, why will it not fall into recession? We need to know what caused the recession so that we don’t give it a wrong diagnosis,” he added.

The term “fantastically corrupt” was coined by former British Prime Minister, David Cameron while speaking to Queen Elizabeth about Nigeria.

“We had a very successful cabinet meeting this morning. We talked about our anti-corruption summit. We’ve got…leaders of some fantastically corrupt countries coming to Britain,” Cameron said in May at an event held in Buckingham Palace to mark the queen’s 90th birthday.

“Nigeria and Afghanistan are possibly two of the most corrupt countries in the world,” he added.

However, President Muhammadu Buhari refused to demand an apology for the comment but instead asked Cameron and other world leaders to return Nigeria’s looted funds which had been stashed in their country.

‘Rise Up Against Sale Of Nigeria’s Assets’, Shehu Sani Urges Nigerians

SHehu SaniPopular social activist and senator, Shehu Sani, has described proponents of sale of the country’s national asset as “economic predators and profiteers who want to take advantage of the situation in the country.”

Mr. Sani, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign and Local Debts, said in a statement to Premium Times today that “Nigeria’s capitalist forces raped Nigeria to recession and now they want to kill and bury it.”

Mr. Sani, from Kaduna State, condemned the suggestion as being against the interest of the nation. He said privatization in Nigeria has not delivered the much anticipated efficiency and services other than enrich a few fronts and their masters.

“There is currently nothing to show for the sale of government houses, (and) firms. The advocates of sale of our collective national asset simply want to dispossess Nigerians and expand their business empire.

“They call themselves private sector and business men; they refused to invest in agriculture, solid minerals or science and technology, they simply want to buy off profitable public asset.

“There are no captains of industry in Nigeria other than crony businessmen, rent seekers, commission agents who depend on patronage from government.

Mr. Sani said the country’s businessmen prefer to buy off “ready-made” oil wells and gas from the Niger Delta, instead of investing funds to find oil and gas in Lake Chad and Benue trough.

He called on Nigerians to rise up against any attempt to sell the country’s asset, arguing that, “Selling our national asset to stem recession is like selling ones lungs to buy food.

“Recession should excite innovation and ideas and not justify roguery. …. Nigeria’s poor have always lived under systemic recession and depression and on the edge of extinction,” he said

Ex- Governor, Igbinedion, Ize-Iyamu diverted N4bn loan to private account – Gov. Oshiomhole

Adams Oshiomhole

The Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, has exposed how a former Governor of the state, Lucky Igbinedion diverted N4 billion bank loan to a private account in Lagos.

The outgoing governor made the revelation while responding to a statement credited to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, where he said that the report by the Debt Management Office showing that the state is one of those heavily indebted revealed that he ( Oshiomhole) lied  of not collecting a foreign loan.

But the governor in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Peter Okhiria maintained that his admunistration runs an open door policy, stressing that the records are there for all to see, alleging that the state has a record of how the the PDP leadership under former Governor, Igbenidion diverted N4 billion borrowed on behalf of the state to an account in Lagos.

The statement reads, “We make bold to state, and the facts are clear, that in spite of earning the highest revenues from the Federation Account, the PDP states in the South-South region are the most indebted in the region and not Edo State.

“The domestic debt profile released by the DMO as at December 31, 2015, the last time it was issued, lists Delta State as having a debt profile of N320,605 billion; Akwa Ibom had N147,575 billion; Cross River: N115,522 billion; Rivers, N134,9566 billion; Bayelsa N103,374 billion as against Edo which had a far lower profile. While the other South-South PDP States have continued to amass domestic debts with high-interest rates, Edo is close to completely liquidating its domestic debt.

“While Ize-Iyamu continues to peddle his falsehood, we have the record of the N4 billion borrowed by the PDP government of Mr Lucky Igbinedion, with the knowledge of Osagie Ize-Iyamu as Secretary to State Government from Guaranty Trust Bank and Equitorial Trust Bank and paid to an address in Lagos.

“Edo people are not deceived. They know that the PDP and its sympathisers have a record of borrowing to steal and not the APC government led by Comrade Adams Oshiomhole.

“Our records are open and we run a transparent government. No amount of planted or concocted stories by hack writers will distort the facts.”

Leave Jibrin Alone, Falana Writes Dogara

FEMI-FALANA

A senior Nigerian lawyer, Femi Falana, has written to the speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, demanding an immediate discontinuation of the house’s investigation of Abdulmumin Jibrin. Mr. Falana said the probe was an attempt to suspend Mr. Jibrin, despite an ongoing court case against such move.

Mr. Jibrin, a member of the house from Kano, is accused of misconduct after he accused Mr. Dogara and other leaders of budget fraud. The house has not investigated the alleged corruption.

Instead, it mandated the Ethics and Privileges Committee to probe claims by some members that Mr. Jibrin damaged their reputation by making public allegations, and not following internal channels. The committee opened sitting Friday, but Mr. Jibrin is billed to appear on Monday.

Mr. Falana, who is Mr. Jibrin’s lawyer, said in his letter that Mr. Dogara should disband the committee because its constitution contravened the house rules. Citing order 9 rule 5 of the House, he said Mr. Dogara lacked the powers to constitute a panel over a matter that was before a court.

Mr. Falana said Mr. Jibrin had filed an action before the Abuja Division of the Federal High Court with suit No.: FHC/ABJ/CS/50/5/2016 between Mr. Jibrin and the House of Representatives and 13 others.

Mr. Falana said Mr. Dogara was represented in the suit by his lawyer, Ikechukwu Obiora & Co.

He threatened to commence contempt of court proceedings against the speaker if the investigation of Mr. Jibrin continued.

In a separate statement Friday, Mr. Jibrin said he would ensure the Mr. Dogara did not escape the unfolding budget padding scandal unscathed, saying his “day of reckoning is so close”.

“There is nothing you can do on earth to stop it. No amount of lobbying, legislative antics or blackmail of members of the House, Senate, executive arm or individuals outside the House can help you and your cabal of few corrupt members,” Mr. Jibrin said in the statement. “Mr Speaker, this struggle is like the rising sun, it is unstoppable.”

On Friday, the ethics committee, headed by Nicholas Ossai (PDP-Delta), heard testimony from Emmanuel Oker-Jev, a lawmaker who moved the motion for Mr. Jibrin’s censure and suspension on Wednesday.

Mr. Oker-Jev tendered evidence of how Mr. Jibrin allegedly rubbished the integrity of the House through his widespread dissemination of internal House documents against the leadership of the House. Mr. Jibrin raised questions about the impartiality of the committee in another statement to Mr. Ossai Friday.

“You did not state what I did that amounted to misconduct so (that) even if I intend to attend, I can know what exactly I am being accused of and come prepared,” Mr. Jibrin said. “This is clear indication that the outcome of your “investigation” is already predetermined.” Mr. Jibrin scolded Mr. Ossai for prioritising disciplinary actions against him rather than address the allegations in his own petition against Mr. Dogara.

The letter by Mr. Falana came after Mr. Jibrin had assured that he would appear before Mr. Ossai’s committee, if its hearing was made public. Friday’s sitting today was witnessed by journalists.

Mr. Ossai told Premium Times on Friday afternoon that he was not aware of any letter from Mr. Jibrin’s lawyer.

“I have not seen any letter from them,” Mr. Ossai said. “But even if they write to us, it won’t stop the members of the committee to continue doing the work the House has mandated them to do.”

Mr. Ossai said his committee hopes to see Mr. Jibrin on Monday and reiterated that it would be an open hearing.

Make Una Leave Patience, By Charly Boy

Charly BoyThe latest unconfirmed gist heating up the social media is about former First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, who is spitting fire on EFCC for freezing her accounts containing about 6.3 billion Naira, claiming that she is being deprived of her right to her hard-earned money.

Yes o, however you wan look am, she worked for that money!

Why are people suddenly upset?

Isn’t it the same Naija people who have been shouting, “bring back our corruption”, since the country slipped into recession?

Dia ris God ooooo!!!

Since 1978 or so, we have been living on corruption money, and hailing the thieves.

Haba Naija, I tire for una. Continue…

Abegi make we hear word and make we read something useful on this social highway. Una dey provoke say dem see billions for Mama Peace account.

And so?

When will we ever learn?

Yes, a country deserves the kind of leadership it gets because those who rule us are from amongst us, they are not from Ghana or Togo. How many times will we let a thief into our house? The first time should be enough. The second time, lets take that as one chance. The third time means we are stupid. If we, the followers are not like our leaders, why haven’t we done anything to stop the looting of our resources??

Countries that don’t have brave youths, prosecutors, fearless judges, good policing and fearless citizens will instead, have plenty of thieves, many killers and even stupid leaders.

Since we have settled for people deceiving people and it has become our way of life let’s roll over and die or accept everything we see that assaults our intelligence and impoverish us.

Wetin???

For if you suffer your people to be ill-educated, and their manners to be corrupted from their infancy, and then punish them for those crimes to which their first education disposed them, what else is to be concluded from this, but that you first make thieves and then punish them?

We have been living on corruption money long before now and we didn’t care.

I know that looters will be looted, while time and tide will make most of us mercenaries .

For long, our leaders have used deception and misdirection as their tools. We don’t believe in hard work, when a false face and a good line of bullshit can do so much more.

As for us the masses, we are all waiting for our turn to steal something from some place, Kai, our mumu is vexing me joor.

So how can we effectively create this new dawn when most of us are all guilty.

Now Baba has come to fight corruption, but I can swear that he is alone in this fight. Because most of the people in his kitchen are corrupt. Yes o.

Till there are grave consequences for people who break the law, people who steal public funds, known corrupt people who are till today in leadership positions, nothing will change. This too will come to pass and nothing go happen. Dem go settle, and back to business as usual.

Has anyone one been thrown into prison since this war on corruption started? My people, abegi, make we use our brain.

I just pray that one day one day, there will be no hiding place for people who ruined this country.

For those who took what they didn’t earn, may judgement await them!

It is only from then that things will begin to truly change.

The injustices stink…tufiakwa!!!

I don talk my own sha.

Three abducted landlords at Oshorun Heritage Estate, during a fitness exercise, their trainer and some farmers kidnapped last weekend In Isheri and Epe areas of Ogun and Lagos States have been freed.

Kennedy Ucheagwu, Dr. Omololu Bello, Fidelis Esang and trainer Olalere Olawale, as well as Toyosi Aboderin, Ogechi Maku, Toju Amorighoye, and six-month-old Funniyi Tayo Lawal were freed by their abductors in the wee hours of yesterday.

Although the gunmen, suspected to be Niger Delta militants had allegedly demanded N1.2 billion for the freedom of the four Isheri victims, it was learnt that they eventually collected N16million ransom.

The Nation learnt that the ransom was paid at about 10pm by a group of men, who went close to the island where the victims were held and deposited the amount at a designated spot.

It was learnt that the victims were then dropped off at a place near the estate as agreed by the kidnappers at about 12am, while the Epe farmers, were said to have returned home into the waiting arms of their family members around 1:30am.

The Nation gathered that the operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigerian Army and the Air Force have been combing the bushes and gathering footages of the kidnappers. It was learnt that the service provider (Etisalat) whose simcard was used in contacting relatives for ransom was tracked and the name, pictures and other vital information of the leader of the gang was revealed.

He was said to be a young man buy with affluence as he allegedly owns a huge mansion with several exotic cars.

Also revealed was the identity of the lady who ran errand like buying food and other basic things for the gang and hostages.

It was however learnt that the security operatives were unable to use force on the kidnappers since the victims were still in their custody.

At the estate yesterday, residents rejoiced over the safe return of the victims, urging that security be beefed up in the area to avoid recurrence. They said the victims were sighted at about 11:45pm near the creek by vigilantes who thought they were criminals.

“The local vigilantes wanted to shoot but the victims told them that they were those kidnapped last Saturday. The vigilantes then used their motorcycles to take them to their homes one after the other,” said a resident. They urged the police to equip its marine unit, as well as establish a post within the neighbourhood, expressing fears that they gunmen could strike again.

The Nation gathered that the victims were taken to an isolated island, where the militants ensured that they were ‘comfortable’.

A resident who refused to be named, said victims and all those aware of the ransom were warned by the police to not mention it, adding that they were told that admitting to it could attract more danger to the estate.

RAPEThe arm of the law caught up with an okada rider identified simply as Daniel in Otukpo, Benue State, after he allegedly raped an eight-year-old girl in his room on Ogiri Okoh Street, to a point where the girl became unconscious.

Saturday Punch learnt that vigilantes from Igbanonmaje arrested the suspect after the girl’s mother learnt of the incident. It was learnt that after the girl became unconscious, the suspect poured water on her to resuscitate her, after which he sent her home.

A resident of the street on which the victim’s mother lived, said the girl explained that Daniel forced himself on her after he had told her to help him buy food.

The resident said the mother became suspicious when the girl came back home, walking with her legs apart.

The victim’s mother was said to have raised the alarm, after the girl said Daniel inserted his manhood in her and did not know anything again.

“She said by the time she woke up in his room, he saw the man pouring water on her,” the resident told Saturday Punch.

After vigilantes in the area were reportedly alerted, they went in search of Daniel and arrested him a few hours later. The suspect, a native of Ado Local Government Area of the state, said even though he had tried to rape the girl, he left her alone because he could not penetrate her.

“Because my manhood was too big for her, I could not penetrate and had to leave her alone,” he told the vigilantes. He however denied raping the girl to the point of coma.

Saturday Punch was told that Daniel had been handed over to the police.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident, stating that the victim was now in police custody.

dr-segun-abraham-victory-sign

Runner up of the September primary election of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo state, Dr. Segun Abraham has said that he will not dump the party despite the current challenges.

He says he will remain in the party to reclaim his mandate which had been allegedly given to Mr. Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN.

Abraham with two other aspirants, Chief Olusola Oke and Senator Ajayi Borrofice had approached the party’s appeal committee asking for total cancellation of the primary election.

The National Working Committee, NWC, of the party last week had rejected the recommendations of the appeal committee and upheld the victory of Akeredolu.

Addressing Journalists at the state secretariat of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Alagbaka Akure, Abraham, who at the weekend wrote to APC leaders and members, said since there are protest on the votes of the alleged winner, he is automatically the winner of the election.

He said he will continue to pursue the course of his mandate until it is retrieved.

According to him, there are three levels of authorities, we have only explored one level, if the need to go to court arises, we will explore it.

His words: There can be no authentic and stable democratic government without justice. There is a growing awareness that the APC government has the capacity to indulge in corrupt and unjust systems and practices.

“Resolving the quagmire in Ondo state is a golden opportunity for the APC to showcase to the world and give Nigerians real confidence that we are a just and honest party.

“As the people have placed their full confidence in me, through both their votes and continuous clamor for my mandate, I have resolved to pursue truth and our just cause by all legal means, with full determination to get our mandate back. I would stay in the party and work with all to correct all the anomalies.

“APC as the opposition in Ondo has a unique chance to conquer any party in the State, but this can only be achieved when there is justice, fair play and sincerity of purpose.

“People may be going to another party, I am a landlord and I won’t leave my party.”

Reuben Abati Celebrates Sunny Ade At 70

king-sunny-ade-b

Chief Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, the legendary juju musician popularly known as King Sunny Ade deserves the four-month-long celebration of his 70th birthday which began on September 1, marked with great attention on September 22, the actual date of his birth, and scheduled to run till December 31, 2016, in the United States, Nigeria and the UK.

With two Grammy nominations, over 50 years of genius-level achievement as a musician, and over 120 albums, many of which remain evergreen, King Sunny Ade has proved his mettle as a world-class musician, a true artist, an impresario and an astute businessman.

This great Nigerian artiste is better experienced in performance. I still watched him on stage in Ibadan about two weeks ago, and characteristically, he remained on stage for hours entertaining guests with dexterous dancing, his mastery of multiple instruments and the infectious joy with which he performs his task. It is hard to believe that the old man is actually 70.

He looks today almost exactly the same way he looked more than a decade ago. He keeps belting out new songs, and winning new fans. His humility on stage is impressive and that is something many of these one-album, two-album mega stars of the new generation of musicians should learn from King Sunny Ade and other members of his generation.

King Sunny Ade makes music, particularly the juju genre to which he has contributed greatly and helped to build into a global brand, seem like something really easy and effortless. He is above all, a cross-over artiste, a polyvalent genius. All true art appears easy.

The mark of a true artist lies in his originality and commitment and innovativeness. The full distillation of genius places the depth of the rigour at an aesthetic distance, to be discovered instantly and vicariously but with the full impact of talent in view. KSA’s career is a living example of how originality, endurance and determination usually pay off in the long run. In the early part of that career, he faced very stiff competition from the likes of Ahuja Bello, Emperor Pick Peters (e ki lo fo’mo ode ko ma rin ni pa do…), Y.K. Ajao, Admiral Dele Abiodun (Adawa Super Sound): equally talented musicians who came onto the scene at a time when the public valued and recognized creativity and true talent.

As it turned out, KSA’s main rival was Chief Ebenezer Obey: and that rivalry endured and stood out because while both are jujumusicians, they did not try to copy each other, and the originality of the one accented the uniqueness of the other, providing a complementarity that the public cherished and patronized even if the rivalry was also a victim of mischief.

Today, both King Sunny Ade and Chief Ebenezer Obey now in their winter season may not wish to dwell too heavily on that season of their careers, and that is perfectly fine, but what we remember is how that competition promoted the art and the sub-genre of juju melody and percussion. But note this: yet another critical moment in KSA’s career was the emergence of a younger generation of juju musicians.

The combination of Segun Adewale and Shina Peters, for example, almost drove KSA off the juju scene and when that superb collaboration collapsed, most regrettably I must say, and Shina Peters seized the market with Afro-Juju, a greater deployment of syncopation, melody and instrumental wizardry (Shina Peters posed a threat to KSA not to Ebenezer Obey in this regard), the King’s career again seemed threatened.

There was also Dayo Kujore (Osupa ti de, Osupa ti de o, oba irawo), or Dele Taiwo (the Shina_Peters initial clone who later stood up for himself), or well, Micho Ade (Ogun Laye). But KSA has survived all odds. He took dangerously ill at a time and yet he survived. His music producer disappointed him. He set up his own label.

His band boys have abandoned him more than twice in the last 30 years, he simply disbanded and put another team together. In the face of every adversity, he has worked hard to prove that he is a master of the game, if not the overall owner of it.

As he turns 70, we salute his resilience and courage. We recommend a special focus on how this particular artiste is completely self-made. When I interviewed him for The Guardian more than a decade ago when he was still President of the Musicians Association, PMEAN, he actually confessed to me, that he practically learnt to speak English through personal effort.

But during the interview, he had a laptop in front of him. Too many young artists today behave as if they know it all, or rather they are convinced that they already know more than enough. Sorry, nobody ever knows enough. That is why Professors of more than 50 years are still burning the midnight candle.

If King Sunny Ade had not been a musician, he probably would be a university Professor.  He recently launched a radio station in Ondo state, and he is planning to set up what he calls King Sunny Ade Musical School.  Baba 70,  ko fe gba, and although he is a home boy, stubbornly attached to his natal roots, he is a nationalist as an artiste.

That is yet another lesson for the younger generation. KSA is a master builder. And the builder of the foundation is also a good watchman. Many young artistes are master spenders. They live it up.  They are showy and flippant. They miss the big issues. Art requires depth. We find in King Sunny Ade’s art, uncommon depth and rigour. That is what we celebrate and salute.

The aesthetics of KSA’s music should be the subject of in-depth academic inquiry.  I may be wrong  but I am yet to find such a contribution beyond lame hagiography, but since a newspaper article cannot be devoted to the slightly arcane subject of musical aesthetics and ethnomusicology, I will not even attempt any pompous statements in that direction, but I can say this safely: that King Sunny Ade has done a lot for Yoruba, Nigerian, and African culture on the global stage.

He is not yet in the same boat as the inimitable Fela (Fela belongs to the one-name Pantheon of geniuses from Aristotle to the Pope), but whenever anyone deems it necessary to create a Nigerian Hall of Fame or a museum of the arts, there is no doubt that King Sunny Ade’s place is fully assured as Nigeria’s extra-ordinary cultural ambassador and nationalist.

As band leader, composer, singer and artiste, his accomplishments are huge and remarkable. Between him and others in the second generation of the percussion-infused, potentially growing juju music genre in Nigeria, they have sustained the legacy of the pioneers in that genre: Ayinde Bakare, Moses Olaiya, I.K. Dairo, Dele Ojo, Tunde King Nightingale, Bobby Benson, Kokoro, Irewole Dengel, Adeolu Akinsanya, Ambrose Campbell.

The content of his music, the shape, the sound, and the tone of his art reveal a nationalistic spirit and a positive conscience that promote culture, values, unity, love, progress, development and progressive leadership. King Sunny Ade has successfully avoided a likely identification as a partisan politician also, but his music is indeed intensely political: he is a politician for national progress and so he makes friends across all bridges, with his voice and associations.

In the long run actually, every artist is a politician, because artists serve the people, the market place of art is in the people’s minds, whether the subject is love, unity or life’s many vanities.

Artists are not expected to be perfect human beings. I do not think that anyone would describe King Sunny Ade at 70 as a perfect family man. His stories convey the impression of an extra-ordinarily adventurous and creative man on the romantic front. But if we judge creative persons with the same standards with which we judge ordinary people, there probably would be no art and no creativity.

Some of the finest works of art in human history have been produced by the most unusual souls: differentness ironically produces such illumination previously unknown. For anyone who may have misgivings about KSA, or any other artiste, let them focus on the art and not the persona.  Under the shadow of every genius, stories are bound to sprout and become flowers.

Where is government? Both President Muhammadu Buhari and the Minister of Information remembered King Sunny Ade on his birthday. Very good – I know how that works. I issued many of such statements.

I suppose that King Sunny Ade and all other Nigerian artistes in the various genres: plastic, visual, imagic, theatrical and spatial will be most delighted, however, if government’s celebration of individual artistes or a group such as Nollywood is translated into a coherent National Cultural Policy or an Endowment for the Arts which properly recognizes the fundamental rights of artistes as nation-builders and the strategic place of the creative industry in the leadership process, Nigeria will gain a lot more. Artistes save nations just as athletes, administrators, investors and scientists do: harnessing all potentials strategically is how nations are built. King Sunny Ade would probably be much happier if governments at various levels were to a do a lot more for the Nigerian artist. The legacy objective of the Foundation which he proposes, should be in this direction.

At 70, he is definitely and now incontrovertibly an elder, may he live much longer before he becomes an ancestor, may he also last longer than that his former boss, Fatai Rolling Dollars, and if he so wishes, may God grant him that same strength with which Fatai Rollar Dollars was cracking fire and attracting neighbourbood maidens at close to 90. KSA, sa ma yin won logo…baba omo igboro worldwide, tu-ale (!);may you remain healthy upstairs and downstairs.

And may you also continue to produce good music. And as for all the younger artistes wondering what this is all about, I leave you with King Sunny Ade’s comments about how nowadays, “we see more of vulgar lyrics”. He says younger artistes should be more interested in “what the ears will hear and eyes will see in 20 years (and) and they will not be ashamed to regret anything”. I made that same point a few years ago, before I went to Abuja and I was crucified for weeks in a very malicious public debate. Thank you KSA for telling them

Samson Siasia, Nigeria’s former under-23 coach, has given the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) a two-week ultimatum to settle its debt to him.

Siasia says the NFF owes him five months’ salary arrears from the start of April to August 2016.

The 49-year-old led the country to a bronze medal finish at the Rio Olympics. Barely five weeks after ending his two-year contract on a high, Siasia said his patience is fast running out.

“I have given them a two week ultimatum to pay me or I will sit inside the NFF office in Abuja until I get paid,” Siasia told BBC Sport.

“The national team is preparing for a World Cup qualifier and to be honest my unhealthy distractions are the last thing they need right now.

“I’ve made it clear in my letter that my assistants and I should be paid the backlog owed because it’s inhuman.

“As head of our families we sacrificed everything for the country but the NFF refused to pay us – it’s not only heartless but wicked,” he said

Biafra: Judge withdraws from Nnamdi Kanu’s trial

The trial judge of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, Justice John Tsoho on Monday withdrew from the ongoing case.

Tsoho announced his withdrawal from the trial at the Federal High Court, Abuja, while reacting to an application by Kanu’s lawyer, Chuks Mouma, who accused him of bias in the handling of the matter.

He said Kanu’s case file has been returned to the Chief Justice of the Court, Ibrahim Auta for reassignment.

Mouma had accused the court of acting in line with the suggestion of President Muhammadu Buhari that the incarcerated IPOB leader will not be released under any circumstance.

According to Mouma, the court should hands off the proceedings in line with a petition written to the National Judicial Council, NJC, to protest the judge’s handling of Kanu’s trial.

“We are only asking the court to hands off; my client has lost confidence in this court.

“I understand that there is a letter to NJC, though I haven’t seen it and the CJ has replied saying that the matter will be investigated.

“I would urge you that you transfer the matter; I would suggest that it be sent back to the CJ,” he said.

Reacting to Mouma’s submission, Justice Tsoho said, “I have no interest in trying your matter and I will return it to the CJ, but I will condemn the attitude of that counsel. I do not care if you take your case to another planet.

“This case is hereby transferred to the CJ.”

Kanu who is currently standing trial before Justice Tsoho for charges bordering on treasonable felony had faulted the judge over his handling of his case.

Mugabe’s UN exit threats ‘reckless, undiplomatic’ – Analysts

Zimbabwean political analysts and opposition parties have reportedly described President Robert Mugabe as “delusional” and “insane”, following his utterances over the weekend that the African continent was ready to pull out of the United Nations if its demands for reform were not met.

Mugabe told his ruling Zanu-PF supporters soon after his arrival in Harare on Saturday from the United Nations summit in New York that Africa was ready to pull out of the UN if its demands for two permanent Security Council seats were not met.

African countries have, since 2005, been requesting for two permanent seats in the UN Security Council as well as five non-permanent seats, as they demanded a fair representation in the global organisation.

An article by The Conversation said that Africa, despite the rambling annual speeches of its leaders at the UN, was rarely heard when it came to decision making.

‘Reckless and undiplomatic’

Mugabe said that the African Union was planning to form a splinter group with countries such as Russia, China and India if the UN Security Council did not include members of its continent next year.

“It is not all permanent members being tough. It is Britain, France and America… If they remain adamant, they must not cry foul when we agree to form our own organisation with countries like China, India and other Asian countries. This is what we want to do next year in September, when we have made a commitment,” Mugabe was quoted as saying.

However, according to NewsDay, various opposition parties described Mugabe’s threat as “reckless and undiplomatic”.

Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni, said that the threats by Mugabe would further alienate Zimbabwe from the rest of the world.

He said that the move would also bring unimaginable strife to the country’s cities which were now dependent on funds that were sourced by the UN agencies.

‘He is delusional’

The Movement for Democratic Change, led by Morgan Tsvangirai said that the country could not afford to leave the UN at any time, as this would be “disastrous” for the southern African nation.

“As we face biting food shortages, the UN is feeding over a million of our people, while government is clueless. Imagine what would happen if, say, the mad man pulls us out,” MDC spokesperson Obert Gutu was quoted saying.

Meanwhile, according to New Zimbabwe, the leader of the People’s Democratic Party, Tendai Biti said Mugabe’s call was “ill-advised”, adding that the nonagenarian was “delusional”.

“He is delusional. No sane African country will pull out of the UN. The UN is part of the global infrastructure that has basically prevented a global war from happening over 70 [years]. The UN has been key in the execution of international law and global diplomacy that has kept the world as safe as possible,” Biti was cited as saying.

AfDB approves $1bn loan for Nigeria

The African Development Bank (AfDB) has approved $1 billion loan towards meeting the deficits in Nigeria’s 2016 Budget, believed to partly responsible for the country’s economic crisis.

The loan is provided at 1.2 percent interest rate.

AfDB President, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, disclosed these to State House correspondents on Monday after meeting with Vice President and other members of the Economic Management Team (EMT) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Stressing that Nigeria is the largest shareholder of the bank, Akinwunmi said the bank is in Nigeria to offer its strong support to the country as it faces tough time.

He said: ” African Development Bank (AfDB), we have a very strong delegation team to meet Vice President and the economic management team. The bank’s largest shareholder is Nigeria. It is very important for me to be here and to talk to the Nigerian government about the challenges and opportunities that are in Nigeria.

“I think the times are difficult and there is no doubt about that. But I want to commend the government for being bold in taking the right decisions. I think that the fact that the price of crude oil has gone down, is a big challenge because you have 98 per cent external forex revenue coming from the sector.

“So it has created calibrations, I’m not going to go into the details of all the problems but what is important is what we are going to do about it.

“I’m not here to lecture the Nigerian government. I’m here to support very strongly. We have said that we are going to support the Nigerian government with the budget support to be able to deal with some of fiscal imbalance that they have. We are looking to consider for an award of $1 billion to help to deal with that particular deficit.”
