Sony revealed two new PlayStation consoles which included a slimmer PS4 and a PS4 Pro – a new generation of PlayStations made for the hardcore gamer. The PS4 Pro will however only be launched on November 10.
“Our engineering and design teams collaborated to consolidate PS4’s high-performance technology into a smaller, more energy-efficient form factor. When comparing the new PS4 model to the current model, we’ve reduced volume by 30%, weight by 16%, and power consumption by 28%,” Andrew House, Chief Executive of Sony Interactive Entertainment, said.
“Despite the sleek design, the new model packs all of the same powerful components that have made PS4 the best place to play,” he continued.
To date, Sony has noted that over 40 million PlayStation consoles have been sold all across the world, outselling Microsoft’s Xbox One and Nintendo’s Wii U.
How is the upgraded version of the original PS4 different? Well, it’s said to offer 4K gaming with graphics that will be super-realistic, especially if connected to an HDR or high dynamic range TV.

“With more pixels, 4K’s higher resolution delivers graphics that are sharper and have greater detail than ever imagined. HDR enables visuals to look much closer to the way your eyes see the real world,” House wrote.
Mark Cerny, the system architect for the PlayStation 4, revealed that the PS4 Pro would have more than double the power of the console’s GPU. The CPU’s clock rate is also set to be boosted and it will have a 1 terabyte hard drive.
Cerny said that the system will be able to “reach resolutions not thought to be possible on console in 2016”.
The company is expecting that the new PS4 and PS4 Pro will account for almost half of their operating profit for the financial year through March 2017.
Sony also confirmed that there would be a new 4K-focused Netflix app that would launch together with the PlayStation Pro which will have 600 hours of 4K content that will be available on Netflix at the end of this year.
