Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a problem for many men, and contrary to popular belief, even younger men find themselves dealing with this sexual issue. According to sexologist Elna McIntosh, about 52% of men over 40 will suffer from ED, and the chances of it increase with age.
But McIntosh writes that it’s normal for ED to occur occasionally.
“There is no need to worry about the occasional failure to get or keep an erection,” McIntosh writes. “Some of the causes of occasional ED include excessive intake of alcohol, anxiety and tiredness. One of the most common causes of ED in middle-aged men is the lack of sleep.”
Many men usually turn to Viagra to address ED and to improve their sex lives, thinking the drug is the answer to all their sexual problems. But it’s important to understand what the little blue pill can – and can’t – do for you.
Here are a few facts about Viagra:
It is not an aphrodisiac
One of the biggest misconceptions about Viagra is that in addition to making one erect, it boosts your sexual drive. If you have libido problems, Viagra won’t be able to fix that – it can’t give you the urge for sex. Viagra works with your body to improve blood circulation.
You need to be sexually aroused for an erection
You need to be stimulated sexually to get an erection – even when using Viagra. The drug works so that, if the need arises, an erection is available. It won’t bring about an erection otherwise. And remember, the drug doesn’t work immediately after it’s been taken; it takes a bit of time to kick in.
It doesn’t fix ED
It’s important to understand that Viagra is not a cure for erectile dysfunction, but rather a temporary treatment. ED is often a symptom of a more serious health problem, so it’s advisable to consult your doctor when you if start experiencing this.
It does not make sex last longer than usual
Another myth is that if one takes more than the prescribed dosage of Viagra, the effects of the drug will be prolonged. This is false – if you take more than the prescribed dosage, you’re only putting yourself at risk of overdosage. The strength of Viagra doesn’t impact on how long the effects can be felt.
You will ejaculate as normal
It’s important to understand that Viagra doesn’t hinder or change the natural processes of ejaculation. Taking the drug doesn’t mean you can have sex for longer than usual without eventually ejaculating – it doesn’t stop or prolong the time frame in which you orgasm.
