NCC does not regulate content – Danbatta

Umar Garba Danbatta

Executive Vice Chairman (EVC), Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, on Thursday clarified that NCC does not regulate content but only the platforms.

Danbatta made the explanation at the commission’s Head Office in Abuja yesterday when the Management of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), led by its Director General, Mrs. Patricia Bala, paid him a courtesy visit.

The DG thanked Prof. Danbatta for personally receiving them and spoke on avenues both agencies could collaborate on towards National Development.

The meeting also discussed the harmful effects of uncontrolled content on the platforms of telecommunications operators.

In his response, the EVC stated that the Commission does not regulate content but only the platforms.

“The Act establishing the Commission does not allow it to regulate Content.

“In as much as we cannot remove freedom from the young generation on the use of technology, we must ensure that we work together to tackle the disruptive effects of modern communication,” he added.

Professor Umar Danbatta thanked Mrs. Patricia Bala and her team for the visit to the Commission while affirming that the Commission was willing to work with its sister agencies towards providing better services for Nigerians and achieving the Commission’s 8-Point Agenda.
