The Holy Cross Cathedral in Lagos was built by 2 stonemasons and  architects,Lazarus Borges da Silva and Francisco Nobre in a fence gothic style architecture.

The church which was built 144 years ago in 1881 and completed in 1934 never looked its old age because it was built by renowned architects with solid and quality stones. The church is usually known for its high membership as it the biggest Catholic Church in that vicinity. It has played host to many functions, from weddings, funeral, birthdays to launchings and harvest. It also has prominent members of the society as goers. They include the late industrialist,  Molade Okoya Thomas family, the Steve Omojafors, the Da Silvas, the Cardosos, the Savage and many more.

The Cathedral of the Holy Cross is a Church of the Catholic diocese in Lagos. It is the seat of the Arch. Bishop Alfred Adewale Martins and the Lagos Arch. Diocese which also doubles as the headquarters of all the Catholic Church Parishes in the whole of Lagos State. It is notable as the headquarters of all Catholic Church parishes in Lagos.If you think the only business that brings people to Lagos Island is eco­nomic activity you may be wrong.

Although, the dominant factor or centre of attraction to Lagos Island is buoyancy of the economic activities or oppor­tunities there, but there are a number of people who still come to the Island just to worship and serve God.Example of these set of worshippers can be found in Holy Cross Catholic Cathedral located at Catholic Mission Street directly opposite Lagos City Hall, Campos Square area, Lagos Island. At least 2000 of these people many of who do not reside on Lagos Island, still attend this church from wherever they re­side in Lagos State because of their inex­plicable affinity with this historical worship centre since ages past.

There are some other worship centres on Lagos Island, but what makes Holy Cross Cathedral outstanding and centre of attraction is the fact that, it is the Lagos Arch. Diocese and the seat of the Arch. Bishop, who until his retirement lately, the legendary Cardinal Olubunmi Okojie, but now, under the leadership of Archishop Bishop Alfred Adewale Martins.

Incidentally and worthy of mention is the fact that, Lagos Arch. Diocese is the headquarters of all the Catholic Church Parishes in the whole of Lagos State.

Holy Cross Cathedral Church started on the 5th of January, 1861 by a team of three French mission­aries from the Society of African Nations (SMA).

They were Father Fracesco Borghero, Father Franchesco Fernandez and Father Louis Edde respectively. It was gathered that sixty percent of the church members do come from outside Lagos Island territory.Some have even become staunch members whose predecessors were equally members of the Holy Cross Cathedral Church and be­cause of their passion and bond with the church, they have remained members till date regardless of the inconveniences of having to come and worship in the church every week from far distances. The church which always stress the fact they they worship God and honour Mary for being a vessel of honour as de­scribed by God as a pastoral team of 5 where Most Rev Dr Archbishop Adewale martins is the presiding bishop,Reverend Fr Pascal Aggey and Rev Fr Robert Orji are the assistant parish priest, while Reverend Marcellinus Teko is the church administrator,and Rev Fr Anthony serves as the archbishop secretary.

The church observe mass, fast, does charity and evangelization.The church has 4 dignifying features, the cathedral mosaic wall which is a gorgeous mosaic hall right in the middle of the altar, the most Rev Leo Hale Taylor graveside,arch bishop SMA who is the first archbishop of Lagos, The church deepest nature statue expressed in 3 fold responsibility known as Deus Caritas (Benedict XV1) and the crowned statue of our lady of Fatima, a title referring to the Virgin Mary.

And one more thing…the church is the biggest convergence of Rich Catholic men around Lagos.
